Carolina For The Kids Story
Wayne is a 9-year-old boy with obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar affective disorder, borderline autism and developmental delay. Wayne has had many admissions to UNC Hospitals because of digestive problems. During the most recent admission, Wayne had surgery with complications following surgery. Wayne also has a twin brother with special needs, who has trouble coping without his brother and mother. Their mother cares for the boys full-time and stays in the hospital with Wayne, as he is very anxious when he is left without a family member. The family has a limited income, slightly augmented by Supplemental Security Income, which is reduced during prolonged hospitalizations. Due to the father missing work, the family got behind in payment of their electric bill. The For the Kids Fund paid the electric bill, helped with food costs and provided phone cards for the mother to stay in touch with her husband and other son.
