Carolina For the Kids hosted its annual Dance Marathon on Friday and Saturday, following an 18-year tradition. The event raised $420,062.95.

Sophomore Ryan Carp, a member of the publicity committee, allowed The Daily Tar Heel to follow him throughout the 24-hour period and see what the inside of the marathon was really like.

An hour after the marathon began, there was a line of people waiting to check in inside Fetzer Hall, and loud music was already blasting from the dance floor. In the main gym there was a huge stage set up with flashing lights and the UNC v. Butler men’s basketball game airing.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — More than 1,000 UNC students have their dancing shoes on.

They’ve been at it since 7 p.m. Friday, for the 19th annual UNC Dance Marathon.

The money raised by the charity dance-a-thon will go to Carolina For The Kids, a student-run nonprofit that supports patients and families at the UNC Children’s Hospital.

Students also spent the evening watching the Tar Heels beat Butler.

“This is, like, honestly the coolest way to start Dance Marathon because it’s like we’re all out here having a great time raising money for the kids and were watching an amazing game,” said Senior Jon Alliss.

UNC Non-Profit Raises Over $400,000 For the Kids

It’s 4:45 in the afternoon on a Saturday and hundreds of UNC students stand pressed against a stage in Fetzer Gym on campus. They’re sweaty, swollen and exhausted. But they’re enthusiastic and excited. They’re listening to a kid tell knock-knock jokes.

It’s the annual UNC Dance Marathon thrown by Carolina For The Kids (CFTK). The knock-knock jokes were part of the Kid Co-Captain talent show, only one of the hours in the 24-hour no sitting, no sleeping event. CFTK Executive Director Elizabeth Brown said it’s one of her favorite parts every year.

“When I think of Carolina For The Kids, that’s what I picture,” she said. “We’re able to turn such a normal, mundane moment for these kids, the most normal they can get– into something so special.”
