Q: Why is Carolina For The Kids offering a Half Marathon (12 hours) in addition to the traditional 24-hour Marathon?
A: Each year, we look for more ways to increase our dancer participation and total funds raised for the patients and families served by UNC Children’s. As CFTK enters a new decade and celebrates its 21st year, we thought it’d be a great time to introduce a new addition to the UNC Dance Marathon. By offering a Half Marathon in addition to the Marathon, we hope to encourage those who have been fearful of the 24 hours or are unable to participate for 24 hours the opportunity to be a part of CFTK and to have an impact on the patients and families we serve. Q: Who can participate in the Half Marathon?
A: Everyone! Anyone can participate in the Half Marathon or the Marathon. We encourage all UNC students to sign up to be a dancer and have an impact! Q: After learning about the importance and fun of the 24-hour Marathon, can dancers change their minds later and switch from the Half Marathon to the Full Marathon?
A: Of course! We would love for dancers to be a part of the Marathon for the full 24 hours. We have a lot of fun, food, and games planned! |
Q: Do Half Marathon participants still have to raise the same amount of money as the Marathon participants? If so, why?
A: Yes, both the Half Marathon and the full Marathon participants will raise a minimum of $200. By offering the Half Marathon option, our goal is to raise more money for the patients and families of UNC Children's and to increase dancer participation. If we were to reduce the fundraising requirement by half for the Half Marathon, we would not be able to raise as much funds For the Kids! Q: What's the difference between the Half Marathon and the Full Marathon?
A: The 24-hour Marathon is CFTK’s traditional Marathon. In addition to the 24-hour Marathon being a part of the UNC’s bucket list, it represents the symbolic stand for the patients and families of UNC Children's. Also, by participating in the Marathon, participants typically have the opportunity to witness dozens of performances from various groups at UNC and within the community, outside activities on Hooker Fields, the Kenan Stadium Sunrise Walk, and much more! Q: What time does the Half Marathon start?
A: The Half Marathon will begin at 7am on Saturday, March 23rd and end at 7pm along with the 24-hour Marathon. |
“Stephanie” is a 10-year-old who has just been admitted for her 5th admission in the last year and a half for treatment for her chronic lung disease. After each of these admissions, she and her family also had to endure at least 2-3 weeks for home care and missed school and work. Her family lives 2 hours from UNC Hospitals and while both of her parents work, she also had 2 other siblings they are supporting, and they have had to miss a significant amount of work for these admissions. The family makes too much money for any federal or state assistance programs so they are drowning in out of pocket medical expenses. During Stephanie’s most recent 2 admissions, her family received gas assistance, and also took advantage of Parent’s Night Out dinners and Family Pizza Night. Her mother was floored at the generosity of the Carolina For The Kids FTK Fund , explaining that it made it that much easier for her to stay at Stephanie’s bedside and be a support to her when she didn’t have to worry about the cost of all her meals and the trips Dad was having to take between home and UNC.
