A refocus of our support of UNC Children’s
August 10, 2016
Carolina For The Kids is committed to supporting the patients and families at UNC Children’s.
For nearly 20 years, Carolina FTK has helped ease financial burden for families and enhance the experience for patients along the way. At the core, Carolina FTK aims to meet the greatest need for patients at UNC Children’s, and help support services and offerings that most greatly help patients and families.
Last year, we announced plans to build an off-site primary care clinic for children in Chapel Hill. As part of our mission to help meet the greatest needs for families, we recently identified that other areas within UNC Children’s require immediate attention and funding.
Along with UNC Children’s leadership, we have decided to shift our focus from funding an offsite clinic to support the following three critical program areas:
We are still supporting the For the Kids Fund, our flagship grant, that is used to cover costs incurred by families during hospitalization that are otherwise not paid for by insurance. Parent’s Night Out, a grant that allows us to serve a hot meal to patients and their families on every Tuesday night, will also continue. The three critical program areas will be an addition to the For the Kids Fund and Parent’s Night Out.
We feel that this new direction reflects our core mission to serve patients, at the specific moment they are in their care, with the invaluable resources we have been given. We are most thankful to you, our donors, committee members, and friends, for providing these resources.
Stay tuned for more about how this re-tuned focus will help make health care for children in NC and beyond stronger for the future. We are so excited to continue our support of the patients and families of UNC Children’s.

Along with UNC Children’s leadership, we have decided to shift our focus from funding an offsite clinic to support the following three critical program areas:
- Carolina Conexiones; this program aims to improve health outcomes and the care experience through bilingual volunteer patient navigators. Our support will fund the director position for the program.
- The Children’s Play Atrium; the Play Atrium is an important part of the comprehensive, family-centered care provided at UNC Children’s. It gives patients a place to have fun, spend some time outside and take their minds off of being in the Hospital. Our support will allow the Play Atrium to stay open longer during the week, and, in turn, serve more families.
- Promise Grant and Promise Research Grants; these grants help advance programs, services and other Hospital-based initiatives that directly impact care and specific patient-related needs. Our support will allow us to push innovative research and essential care forward thus getting patients well, faster.
