As we dive into the 20th hour of the Dance Marathon, we’re asking around to see what a day in the life of a Dance Marathon student is like. There are so many ways to get involved at the Marathon, and certainly there is a place for every kind of person under the sun as we gather together for this central cause, for the kids

Alyssa and Katherine
Alyssa (left) and Katherine (right) are both freshmen dancers! When asked what their favorite parts of the Marathon were so far, they both immediately recounted the fun they had playing Glow-in-the-dark dodgeball in Woolen. They also enjoyed coloring Saturday morning, and were eager to show off their artistic creations. Katherine also appreciated the opportunity on Friday night to sign up as a bone marrow transplant donor. “As much pain as I’m in right now, this is only a taste of what the patients and families feel everyday,” Alyssa reflected.

Emily
Emily, a junior, has spent three years on the Formal Affairs committee. As a subchair, during the Marathon she has had the responsibility of overseeing the raffle table and helping announce the lucky winners of prizes generously donated by the community. She said that serving as a subchair this past year has been a great learning experience in leadership. Her favorite part of the Marathon is developing closer bonds with her committee and meeting new people. In fact, during her first year at Dance Marathon, Emily met her best friend! There is truly no better way to make memories and new friends than by coming together toward a common goal.

Caroline
Caroline, a sophomore, has enjoyed her first Dance Marathon so far. As an RA, the 12-hour option made it possible for Caroline to have the Marathon experience this year. So far, her favorite part of the Marathon has been the performances, since there is a wide variety of different groups that she hasn’t seen perform before. She was struck by Hospital Hallway, which was dedicated to profiles of Kid Co-Captains, and she said that it was a great way to put faces to the organization and show the real impact behind the figures we raise.

Amy
Amy is a sophomore and a member of the Creative Media committee. This is her first Dance Marathon, and she enjoyed the sunrise walk around Kenan Stadium on Saturday morning the most. “Part of me was a bit deterred at the prospect of walking in the cold, but being surrounded by so many fellow dancers rejuvenated me. Sharing the sunrise with them was a memorable experience I will keep in my heart.” Throughout the past year as a committee member for CFTK, Amy has found a new passion for the organization. “Immersing myself in the energy that people radiate at the Marathon, the fact that they are all gathered here for a common cause, is very inspiring to me because they are trying to achieve a goal beyond their own personal ambitions.”
During the final segment of the Marathon, we will further be reminded why we are here and why we stand, as we await the arrival of the KCC’s and the commencement of Family Hour.
