Hey y’all! My name’s Amy, and anyone who knows me knows that 1) my “y’all” is from Texas, and 2) I’m from Austin, not Texas. There’s a difference.
I might not be born and bred, but I’m for sure a Tar Heel, and I am so grateful for every minute I have on this campus. This is the place I learned what it means to be a part of something bigger than myself. Two things every year never fail to remind the importance of community: Family Weekend, and the annual UNC Dance Marathon, hosted by the Carolina For The Kids Foundation.
Family Weekend would be an easy time for me to feel homesick — and let’s not kid ourselves, we all feel homesick sometimes. But even with my parents 1,336.5 miles away, I have never spent a single Family Weekend alone. I’m forever being adopted by the most incredible friends and their families, and I’ve never once felt an outsider. For that reason, Family Weekend has become a reminder for me to celebrate all of the amazing people who are a part of my life because of UNC.
As for the UNC Dance Marathon, I cannot say enough what being a part of it means to me. It’s a privilege and an honor to share in the strength of patients and families through adversity.
That’s why I’m so excited for Kilometers For The Kids, a big fundraising push for the Marathon, to be a part of Family Weekend this year. The Marathon is about never feeling alone, and even as an out-of-state student, Family Weekend has always done that for me too.
