Everybody loves Dance Marathons for different reasons. Whether you are at Carolina’s Dance Marathon, Iowa’s Dance Marathon or the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School’s Dance Marathon, something unique will stand out. No two people have the same experience.
For UNC first-year Isabel Bravo, one thing stood out, “I loved handling the spreadsheets.”
Bravo graduated from East Chapel Hill High School in June 2017. She participated in CHCCS Dance Marathons both her junior and senior years. Her senior year she was a Co-Director from East Chapel Hill High School.
After spending months organizing, Bravo and her Co-Director of the CHCCS Dance Marathon were able to see all their hard work pay off through spreadsheets.
“Everyday we had a communal spreadsheet that all of the schools were editing and you could see people signing up. As we saw spots filling up it got faster and faster and more exciting. To watch in real time and see people start to participate was really cool.”

The CHCCS Dance Marathon is a joint marathon between East Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill High School and Carrboro High School in collaboration with Carolina For The Kids Community Outreach Committee. The Dance Marathon is hosted at East Chapel Hill High School. Although these three schools’ student governments put on the event, students from any other schools are welcome to attend.
Beginning in 2016, the CHCCS Dance Marathon offers high school students a fun way to be involved with something many students were passionate about. Their Dance Marathon is six hours long and tickets are purchased to attend. Student organizations perform, everyone is split into groups, teams compete in competitions and free food is served. It is simply a big, fun event for the kids.
“It was a by the kids for the kids effort, which is the spirit of Dance Marathon,” said Bravo.

The CHCCS Dance Marathon is divided into four teams: pink, blue, yellow and green.
Still in the beginning stages of the organization, CHCCS hosts their third annual Dance Marathon in February 2018. In the first year, the CHCCS Dance Marathon raised $7,463. The next year, 2017, the amount raised almost doubled to $12,376. The organization hopes 2018 will be the best year yet. All proceeds raised are donated to Carolina For The Kids.
“Dance Marathon is very close to my heart because I have been volunteering at UNC Hospitals for years,” Bravo stated. “I would walk past this big mural that said thank you to UNC Dance Marathon so that was a cool thing to be able to see where the money is going to.”
“I am a volunteer in the Pediatric Playroom so to have met the kids that we were fundraising for was a really special part of the process,” Bravo said.
So, Cheers to CHCCS for stepping up and bringing Dance Marathons to the local high school community. Cheers to new tradition and new marathons. Most importantly, cheers For The Kids.
