Hanna Kim is a member of the Carolina For The Kids Publicity Committee.
I was born with various health complications, leaving me permanently blind in my left eye. By the age of seven I underwent over a dozen operations. I understand first-hand how physically and emotionally draining being a hospital patient can be.
UNC Dance Marathon is a year-long fundraiser that leads to a 24-hour stand in Fetzer Gym. It has been part of the Carolina tradition since 1999. Last year UNCDM was rebranded to Carolina For The Kids in order to accurately capture what the organization stands for; however, the 24-hour event is still known as UNC Dance Marathon.
I knew I had to be involved when I first heard about Dance Marathon. I chose to volunteer at the check-in table, but after discovering how much was raised (a record breaking $570,561.48!) I vowed to do more. I had no idea how big of an impact the Marathon can have. This year I am honored to be part of Carolina FTK's Publicity Committee.
I am looking forward to taking a 24-hour stand with over 2,000 of my fellow Tar Heels.
Why would I choose to spend 24-hours in a sweaty gym filled with strangers? Why don't I just donate money to UNC Children's?
Because UNCDM is more than a fundraiser. It is a day for kids to forget being a patient, be in the spotlight, and dance their troubles away. It is a day for parents to play with their kids and share their stories. It is a day for students and members of the community to gather and express their support. You cannot put a value on the love and support the children and families receive.
I stand because it makes a difference.
I stand For The Kids.
Please join me and sign up to be a dancer! Registration will be all available all week in the Pit or online. Or please consider donating to a great cause.
