A Guide to Surviving and Thriving at the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon
Water is life: Not to sound like a mom here, but drink lots of water. It’s so tempting to chug soda after soda (with some Red Bull and Starbucks in between) during the 24 hours, but it’s so important to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will keep you happy and healthy!
Trust me when I say TENNIS BALLS: It sounds strange, but after the marathon, you will never look at a tennis ball the same way again. These little things are lifesavers when the foot pain starts to kick in. So find a tennis ball and roll away!
Keep your routine: Although there’s no sleeping at the marathon, I think it’s important to keep a normal daily routine going. For me, this means a nice teeth brush and face wash Saturday morning. You psych yourself out to believe you’re starting a new day and you feel refreshed and rejuvenated!
When you don’t think you can walk anymore, keep walking: The best thing you can do when your feet start to hurt is to lace up your tennis shoes and start walking. Don’t stay in one spot or position yourself by a wall. Walking around keeps your blood flowing and your morale up!
Give those feet some air: Another great tip for happy feet is taking little breaks from shoes! Especially during outside time, take some time to walk around in barefeet on the turf. It feels good to take a break from shoes and fresh air does wonders for your body!
An outfit change is everything: Do yourself a favor and bring at least 3 different outfits! This may sound excessive but trust me, a new outfit brings about a new attitude. You will be glad to put on a fresh change of clothes. Be sure to pack clothes that are comfortable- there are no awards for most fashionable!
Marathon friends are the best friends: I’ve made some of my best friends at the marathon and you can too! So many different UNC students all come together for these 24 hours motivated by their passion and excitement for this great cause. This makes it such a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. If you made a new friend every hour, that’s 24 new friends!
With some water, tennis balls, fresh air, a new outfit, and great friends- there’s nothing you can’t do! Not only will you be able to survive the marathon, but you will thrive!
