How to Train for KFTK in Less Than 7 Days

9/17/2018

Kilometers For The Kids is less than one week away, and what better way to kick start your Sunday morning than with a race for the kids! This year’s Kilometers For The Kids will be held on September 23rd at 9am and will feature a 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. All proceeds raised during the event directly benefit the patients and families served by UNC Children’s and help cover expenses not otherwise covered by insurance. Whether you’re an avid runner or a beginning jogger, you may be asking yourself, “How can I train for a 5K in just one week?”

Well, we have a few tips up our sleeves that can help you get in shape just in time for Sunday’s race. By the end of this intense, student-friendly training, you’ll be in the best shape of your life and ready to take on any race!

1. Schedule a class in Hanes Art Center immediately after a class in Kenan Flagler.

Nothing tests your cardio strength more than making the trek from Kenan Flagler to Hanes Art Center in less than 15 minutes. This uphill battle will surely put your calves to work and will make the 3.2 miles seem like nothing!

2. Join an intramural team

Whether it be flag football or soccer, you will get more cardio than you asked for during an IM game. Stakes are high when an IM championship shirt is on the line, and you will be expected to put it all on the line.

3. Live in Lark or Mill Creek

4. Run from the Smith Center to Franklin St. after we beat Duke

While not necessarily applicable to next week’s KFTK, this will definitely prepare you for next year’s KFTK. The run will also serve as a reminder that we are, and always will be, the better blue.

The 5k will begin at 9 a.m., and the Fun Run will begin at 9:15 a.m. Be sure to come out and support an incredible cause! Register online here by 11:59pm on September 20th or visit carolinaftk.org/KFTK . We look forward to seeing everyone there!
