Dance Marathon itself is a Carolina tradition, but Kenan Walk, in particular, holds a special place in the hearts of Tar Heels. Near-perfect weather gave our dancers a motivating drive in the early hours of the morning and a picturesque opportunity to partake in this tradition.
Ashleigh Cornelius and Andria Fernandez, two senior exercise and sports science majors checked this item off their bucket list. This year is the first year the two friends have participated in Dance Marathon.
They both held equally positive attitudes about the energy of the marathon. “Energy comes in waves. We were dancing hardcore during the first hour, and now we are tired, but I’m sure we’ll all probably be dancing hardcore again in a few hours” said Fernandez.
Their favourite aspect of the marathon so far has been the entertainment. “Just all the volunteer groups and performers that perform at all hours of the night is pretty impressived,” Cornelius added.
As seniors participating for the first time in this event, the two expressed some regret for not getting involved sooner.
Cornelius encouraged incoming first years and current undergraduate students “... to do it at least one time,” while Fernandez expressed her wishes that she had been on a committee and been more involved during her undergraduate career, “I feel like being part of Morale, or maybe even a captain would have been so much fun.”
With their brightly coloured tutus and fannypacks and uplifting perspectives, the two indeed looked the part of a Morale & Recruitment committee member, “We’ve even had people try to ask us questions because they think we’re already part of Morale!” Laughed Cornelius.
These two seniors voiced concern about their fatigue, but seemed more than lively and excited for the last half of the 2016 UNC Dance Marathon. A big thank you to all the dancers and supporters participating in this year’s marathon!
