The fifth annual Kilometers For The Kids raised an amazing total of $17,795.25! While check-in and race day registration began under looming clouds, sunnier skies shined over the Old Well as runners crossed the finish line.
Claire Lineberger, as part of her senior bucket list, attended the event and participated in the Fun Run with her twin brother and their parents. “This is my first year running the race. I am probably most excited about running with my dad since we used to run together a lot in high school. My mom will probably walk it, but I’m excited!”
For the second year in a row, the race was held during Parent’s Weekend. Students showed up to run, or walk, with their families, supporters and even their dogs. These pups were not the only ones to bring smiles to the crowd; race motivators and Rameses offered encouragement from start to finish.
Many alumni also returned for the event. Alumna Erin Graham, a former Supply & Logistics committee member, returned after graduating in the spring. She enjoyed running with a group of her friends the most on Sunday: “The weather was much better than a few years ago... and being around all these wonderful people still makes me feel young!”
Along with smiles and cheers, the fastest runners in each age group earned recognition medals provided by 5StarAwards. Clocking in with a time of 22:25 was the first overall female runner, Joseph Tozzi, while the first overall male runner, Yannik Markhof, finished with a time of 17:10.
The 2016 Kilometers For The Kids showed incredible support for the patients and families of UNC Children’s. The rainy start to the weekend did not stop the sun from shining for the 790 race registrants. Thanks so much to all of our Carolina For The Kids friends and family for crossing the finish line with us at another successful Kilometers For The Kids.
