When dancers first enter Fetzer Gym the day of the Dance Marathon, they are overwhelmed with excitement and nervousness. Dancers are eager to finally see the culmination of their year-long fundraising efforts, but nervous because the thought of standing for 24 hours is daunting.
However, whether through their dancer team or random encounters, dancers are able to build a support system. These new friends push one another through energy slumps and motivate each other to keep dancing even when the 24-hour mark seems far away.
Katie Otto, a junior who’s participating in her third year of the Dance Marathon, met Alex Reinhart during her first year. In the afternoon of the marathon’s second day, Katie and Alex bonded while playing soccer and joining in on the massage trains.

“Since then, we’ve gone on to become really close friends,” Katie said. In the fall of 2017, Katie and Alex were roommates as they studied abroad together in Spain.
“I think it’s super cool that if it weren’t for the Dance Marathon I might not have come as close with her as I am now!” Katie said.
