According to Christian Lutz, there truly isn’t anything like Carolina For The Kids.
A sophomore majoring in public policy and environmental science, Christian first became involved with Carolina For The Kids as a dancer at the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon. Christian says that he joined the organization because he sees Carolina For The Kids as a “very important piece of the Carolina community,” and an organization whose members commit themselves to a cause greater than themselves.
In order to help support the patients and families of UNC Children’s Hospital, Christian raised funds throughout the year leading up to the marathon; his favorite method of fundraising was canning, in which Carolina For The Kids members go door-to-door in local neighborhoods and collect donations. For Christian, canning has a dual benefit for Carolina For The Kids. Not only does canning contribute to Carolina For The Kids’ fundraising efforts, it also “spreads the word about all the good that Carolina For The Kids does in the community.”
Christian describes the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon as “one of the most challenging things, physically and mentally, that I have ever done.” His favorite moment of the Marathon was Family Hour, when the patients and their families told their stories on stage. Family Hour was both rejuvenating and fulfilling for Christian; it reminded him of the larger cause that he was standing for and put his experience at the Marathon into perspective.
After an amazing experience at the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon, Christian knew that he wanted to become more involved with Carolina For The Kids. As a result, he decided to join a committee. Christian was looking for a committee that matched his skills and talents, and he wanted to make a big difference there.
After reading about all 14 committees, Christian applied to join the Sponsorship & Development Committee, which is responsible for soliciting corporate donations and sponsorships for Carolina For The Kids. As a member of the Sponsorship & Development Committee, he hopes to put his skills and talents to good use as part of this year’s fundraising efforts, and he is excited for the 2018 UNC Dance Marathon this spring.
