A member of the Morale & Recruitment Committee this year, Olivia Burston saw herself as a perfect fit for Carolina For The Kids.
“I’ve been working with kids for years, I love to dance, and I wanted to be a part of such a great organization,” Olivia said.
Olivia first became involved with Carolina For The Kids last year as a dancer in the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon. To raise funds for the Marathon, Olivia utilized Facebook to reach friends and family, and she participated in letter push, a Carolina For The Kids fundraising tool in which personalized letters are sent to the unique addresses that dancers provide, asking for their support of Carolina For The Kids’ mission through a monetary donation. As part of her involvement with Carolina For The Kids, Olivia also attended other Carolina For The Kids events, including benefit nights at local restaurants.
However, Olivia’s favorite event by far was the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon. “It was amazing!” Olivia said. For Olivia, the Marathon was fulfilling on several levels.
“I made some new friends, I got to dance a lot, I held a hedgehog for the first time, and there was food,” she said. Oliva said favorite moment came as the Marathon was coming to a close.
“The best part is the families telling their stories and introducing us to their kids [during Family Hour]. That’s the moment when you realize all of the fun you’ve been having at the Marathon and all of the time spent stressing throughout the year if you’re on a committee goes towards something bigger than ourselves and helps kids and their families live with less hardship.”
After participating in the 2017 UNC Dance Marathon as a dancer, Olivia knew that she wanted to become more involved with Carolina For The Kids; she first looked to the Morale & Recruitment Committee, tasked with recruiting dancers, volunteers, and motivators for the Marathon along with providing a morale boost to UNC Dance Marathon participants.
“It just looked like everyone was having such a great time working together and they had really bonded over the year so I wanted to be a part of that.” Olivia is excited to be a member of the Morale & Recruitment Committee for the 2018 UNC Dance Marathon, and she encourages all UNC students to sign up for the Marathon in some capacity.
