College is a time to explore news things. To become a member of every organization (and listserv) you can until you find the one that sticks. For Haley Waxman, UNC-CH class of 2016, that organization was Carolina For The Kids.
“Freshman year I was your typical dancer,” said Waxman. “I had been approached about joining a committee, but I didn’t want to over-involve myself too soon so I just signed up to dance. Completing my first Dance Marathon was no doubt one of the hardest things I had ever done, but I knew the second I sat down at the end, that I would be back for more.”
Haley’s interest in Carolina FTK continued to grow through each year of college. Sophomore year she served as a member of the Publicity committee. It was during that year that Haley’s involvement in Carolina FTK not only helped her find some of her best friends, but also inspired her in her academics.
“I think it was definitely my sophomore year on the committee that really solidified my decision to study public relations because I saw all the good it could do,” said Waxman. “And total reveal that year is still so vivid in my mind. That’s the year we first broke $500,000 and it was such an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment, knowing I had even a small part in that number and knowing all the good it would do for the families we serve.”
Haley continued to make a difference her junior year taking on her first college leadership role as Copy Edit Subchair during her junior year. This was also an important year for Carolina FTK.
“During my junior year we officially rebranded from UNC Dance Marathon to Carolina For The Kids Foundation. It was such a unique experience to be a part of that process and help shape the future of the organization.”
After the organization successfully blossomed into what is known today as Carolina FTK, Haley became the Publicity Chair. This turned out to be the perfect icing on her college experience as she gained communication skills, expanded her social network and exercised her leadership abilities.
“It’s so inspiring to see what can happen when a couple of passionate, smart people put their heads together for a common goal. Senior year as publicity chair was a challenge and a blur, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”
For Haley, the passion and excitement for this mission didn’t stop after she graduated. She currently serves as the Donor Relations Manager at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. Carolina FTK and the Ronald McDonald House are united by their mission and partner together to support the patients and families of UNC Children’s.
Haley continues to be an involved and supportive Carolina FTK alumni. She stays connected to Carolina FTK through attending events and financially supporting the cause.
“This organization gave me so much, so I always try to do what I can to foster that experience for other students. This cause and the patients and families will forever be worthy of my support.”
