A guest blog post by Hannah Mebane (Mebs), Fundraising Projects Chair.
Hey, my name is Hannah Mebane. But pretty please call me Mebs. There are a lot of Hannah’s in this world; and when you and three other girls lift their head when someone calls “Hannah!” your whole life, you desperately need a nickname. So yeah, please call me Mebs.
If you would have told me a year ago that I would be on the Executive Board for a group on campus, I would’ve laughed in your face. My sophomore year was the epitome of the “sophomore slump,” and I came into my junior year feeling really alone and kind of lost. I was lucky enough to have a friend, Beth, who was on the 2014-2015 Executive Board for Carolina For The Kids, who really encouraged me to apply to be on a committee. Even though I had never really been involved with anything on campus, let alone anything associated with Dance Marathon before (I was never a dancer until my junior year), I said “why not?” and jumped right on in.
I applied and was selected to be on Morale and Recruitment; and those crazy people became my family. I saw them every single week, and our meetings were something I looked forward to. I got to be a part of a wild and fun community whose sole focus was helping others. It’s a really special thing to be around passionate people; and let me tell you, CFTK people are passionate. They put all of their extra time and energy into helping people that they may never meet; that is truly inspiring to me.
Being a part of Carolina For The Kids inspires me all the time. I am constantly in awe of what lengths these people will go to, to help somebody else. That’s why I love this organization and the people in it who have become an integral part of my Carolina experience and family.
