Record setting year for UNC's dance marathon

The UNC Dance Marathon took place over the weekend and raised $614,717 for patients and families of UNC Children’s Hospital.

Students were on their feet for 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, dancing and raising money.

The event was hosted by Carolina for the Kids, one of the largest student non-profits in the state. Since it’s inception in 1999, the organization has raised over $5.4 million.

UNC Dance Marathon, a 24-hour event sponsored by Carolina For the Kids to raise money for UNC Children's Hospital, took place from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Staff Writer Terrance Hudson asked dancers at 5:30 p.m. Saturday how they felt with only one hour of dancing left. Hudson talked to dancers during family hour, when relatives of children who benefit from the fundraising speak to participants.

Dance marathon raises its own bar with $44,000 fundraising increase

The 2016 UNC Dance Marathon broke their own record, raising $44,000 more than 2015’s event.

From 6:30 p.m. on Friday all the way to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, student volunteers raised money for the patients at N.C. Children’s Hospital and their families with dancing and activities in Fetzer Hall and out on Hooker Fields.

Carolina for the Kids Executive Director Meagan Barger said this year the organization was able to raise $614,717.71 for N.C. Children’s Hospital.

When Carolina students twisted and shouted the night away at the annual Dance Marathon recently, they did it for a reason far greater than showing off their moves. Dozens of sick children at UNC Children’s Hospital and their families will have a better quality of life thanks to their efforts. In its 18th year, the Dance Marathon has helped raise nearly $5 million dollars to assist North Carolina families while their children battle illnesses.
