Kalina MacKay—the public relations chair for Carolina For the Kids (C.F.T.K.), a nonprofit organization that serves UNC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina—faced a unique dilemma: digitally wrangling 1,000 University of North Carolina undergraduates for the organization's annual dance marathon. The 24-hour in-person event had been canceled, but MacKay launched a virtual iteration on March 20, primarily via C.F.T.K.’s social media accounts.

CHARLOTTE AND CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Every year UNC students hold a 24-hour Dance Marathon to raise money for the UNC Children’s Hospital. It brings out hundreds of students.

The Carolina for the Kids Foundation was scheduled to hold their annual Dance Marathon March 20-21
It was cancelled because of the coronavirus, so they decided to hold it virtually

“It takes a lot of work and planning,” Carolina for the Kids, Public Relations Chair, Kalina MacKay said. “We started planning this last April.”

This year, due to the coronavirus, the event was canceled, but organizers didn’t want their hard work to go to waste. In 2019 they raised more than $440,000 for UNC Children’s Hospital.

Leaders of Carolina for the Kids, the student organization that puts on the Dance Marathon fundraiser to benefit the UNC Children’s Hospital, moved the party online in accordance with the University’s efforts to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

DANCE MARATHON GOES VIRTUAL AT UNC: An annual fundraiser at UNC-Chapel Hill is taking on a new beat this year.

Carolina For The Kids' UNC Dance Marathon will be held online this year. The event benefits the UNC Children's Hospital and is normally held in UNC's Fetzer Hall. The virtual dance starts at 7 p.m. on March 20 and ends 24 hours later. During that time, CFTK will share content online to mimic the dancers. The dancers who would've participated are being asked to raise $24 to represent the 24 hours of dancing.

It may seem like a long-shot to raise $60,000 in 24 hours — but for the dancers and executive members of Carolina For The Kids, it’s a crucial part of their yearly fundraising efforts for UNC Children's Hospitals.

Starting Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., CFTK kicks off its 60k in One Day campaign, which includes fundraising over social media, sales in the Pit and benefit nights at local businesses.

The dance routines, posters and brightly colored tutus of recruitment for the UNC Dance Marathon aren't gone yet — this year, Carolina for the Kids is adding a second round of publicity for its annual event and taking it digital. 

The fundraising initiative, which takes place in March, has become a UNC tradition that involves campus dance teams and a cappella groups, while also raising money for the UNC Children’s Hospital.

Heroes and princesses meet children at UNC Children's Hospital

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Kids at the UNC Children's Hospital were treated to an afternoon of fun thanks to a group of students.

Two nonprofit organizations, Carolina for the Kids and Moment of Magic foundation teamed up to bring superheroes and princesses to the hospital raising the spirits of kids fighting severe illnesses.

Children also got the chance to watch movies and hang out in a photo booth.
